In early September I was so excited to receive a review copy of Amy Tan’s new novel ‘The Valley of Amazement’ which is due to be published in the UK by Harper Collins on the 5th November.
In the tradition of Tan’s most famous novel, The Joy Luck Club, this book follows a family across three generations and like the aforementioned story, focuses in particular on the relationship between mothers and daughters and on fate and identity. It moves between turn of the century Shanghai and nineteenth century San Francisco and is a compelling historical saga about life’s lessons set amidst a courtesan house and a remote mountain village.
I really loved the intricate historical details woven into this book, not to mention the gorgeous, evocative descriptions of the people, clothes and scenery. It’s a bit of a chunky read and had me spellbound for days- definitely 4.5 out of 5 stars from me!

Thanks to both Harper Collins and Lovereading for the review opportunity.
